A most unusual art show is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday evening, Dec. 7, featuring doors painted by student-artists from 25 of the most impacted campuses by Hurricane Harvey. This is an effort to reflect, rebuild and remember.

The fine arts initiative — known as Project aDOORe Houston — aims to strengthen school communities that were most impacted by Hurricane Harvey by providing students with a means to heal through the creation of art.

Students will use the doors to visually document how the storm affected them, their school, and their community. They also will be tasked with depicting how the city has overcome, united, and grown as a result of the storm.

Project aDOORE Houston was created by HISD’s newly established Fine Arts Department, and the creation of Chandel Hancock, Visual Arts Curriculum Specialist. The doors will be displayed during the Project aDOORe Art Exhibition from Dec. 7 to Dec. 15 at HISD’s Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, 4400 W. 18th St. I first heard about this cool project when I was introduced to Rickey Polidore Jr., just a few weeks after Harvey flooded Houston. We all had Harvey stories, but Polidore’s was the most impactful. The man can tell a story! His enthusiasm, charisma and energy, and maybe the fact that Polidore works for HISD as a Visual Arts Curriculum Specialist, no surprise. It takes someone with a lot of energy to lead children.

I was a little surprised that HISD even has a fine arts initiative, so I asked Polidore to keep me in the loop and send me more details.

“Everyone in Houston was affected in some way by Harvey,” Polidore Jr. said. “By taking this artwork to the community, we hope to encourage someone who may be having a hard time telling their own Harvey story.”

Beginning Dec. 18, the doors will become part of a traveling exhibition that includes stops at the Hermann Park Reflecting Pool, Discovery Green, Houston Public Library-Downtown, and BBVA Compass Bank Stadium. The final stop of the traveling exhibition will be the HISD State of the Schools Luncheon at Hilton Americas Hotel in February.

The reception on Dec. 7, takes place at Hattie Mae White Education Support Center, 4400 West 18th St. 77092. Guest speakers will talk about the exhibit at 6:45 p.m.
